What happened to me the other day.
Posted: July 16th, 2010 | Author: David | Filed under: Uncategorized | View CommentsSome of you may have saw my tweet the other day and panicked. Sorry if it alarmed you, but I”m doing fine. That said, I did end up going to the hospital yesterday. I am very thankful for everyone expressed concern, so I believe you deserve some details and and explanation.
What simply happened was simple: exhaustion and dehydration.
Most of you know how much I work, not just “work work” but also my art, personal projects, etc. When I gave blood a few weeks ago, I think I just did a bad job about maintaining my water intake. If I had to guess, I probably only had five glasses of water in the past three weeks. FIVE! In addition to that, the weather in Seattle has been taking a toll on me—funny to say Seattle’s warm weather, but hey, it has been hot.
My dehydration also caused a case of gout on my toe. Most of you know this as the illness of kings because it’s usually associated with eating a lot of red meat and drinking red wine. Those of you who know me real well also know that those are the two things I do not consume the most. However, gout can be caused by dehydration as well. My toe was in so much pain that there were times the inflamation just caused me to fall over while just standing there.
This was pain I have felt in a long time…probably since watching all of Spiderman 3.
I want to let you all know I’m doing fine…resting the rest of the week and will be ready to be back to my old self tomorrow. I’m going to make some changes to make sure this doesn’t happen again:
- Always have a bottle of water by the computer and take a hydration nudge every hour.
- Instead of waking up really early and losing sleep, I’m going to walk Green Lake during lunch to make myself get out of the house rather than working all the way through the day.
- Change scenery by trying to work at two locations during the day. I work from home, so maybe I can spend one half at home and the other half at a cafe.
Again, thank you all very much for your care and concern. I’m feeling just fine now, but this has made me realize how much I am cared for by my friends and family. That said, remember there are people off much worse than me health wise. Let’s continue to send good vibes to them.

Glad to hear you are alive and will be back at it soon!
It's amazing how exhaustion and dehydration can affect your body! I hate days when i don't get all my water, and it's so hot here in FL too that I feel like I have to drink TWICE as much!
So glad you're ok, David!!
Just glad you're doing alright, man. Don't forget to live a little as well. Life is too short to slave it away.

Thanks, man. It's hard for me because I really enjoy working on projects. Though it's fun, it does take a lot out of me as well. Let's have some dinner when I get back in town next week.
Thanks for your well wishes, Elizabeth. You're very sweet
It's so crazy to forget how important water is, considering it's the building block of life. I definitely am going to have a bottle of water everywhere I go.
I'll be ready for Umi shortly!
