Thoughts on "Avatar"
Posted: December 24th, 2009 | Author: David | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Avatar, James Cameron | View CommentsThere is a reason I’ve seen Terminator 2: Judgment Day nearly 400 times; because of the amazing work of James Cameron. He is a master of detail, special effects and narrative. Cameron’s latest film, Avatar, attests to that. Cameron developed his own motion capture tools to film Avatar. It’s basically a powerful game engine, allowing the actors to interact in an environment rather than digitally adding the environment later. For a bad example, see Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It is by far the most naturalistic 3D CGI movie I’ve ever seen. Man, imagine if he had this technology for a Terminator movie.
Rather than reviewing the movie, I encourage you to go see it for yourself. If you have a small bladder, I suggest you don’t buy a beverage for the movie as the run time is 161 minutes. Sam Worthington proves that he’s a phenomenal actor. I actually thought he was the highlight of Terminator: Salvation and not Batma…I mean Christian Bale. The plot was great and had a narrative in which you were attached to the characters.
Surprisingly there was no Michael Biehn sighting in this movie. In fact, if he was in it, I think he would have done a great job. However, he auditioned for the role of Colonel Miles Quaritch, which would not have been a good fit. Biehn only plays well as a protagonist, in my opinion.
There is also something about Michelle Rodriguez that attracts me…can’t put my finger on it. She did a great job in the movie as a supporting cast-member.
On the negative side, what the hell was up with the Papyrus font?
Though I probably won’t see Avatar 399 times like I did with Terminator 2, you all should check it out in theaters. See it in 3D if you can, and prepare to be amazed.
What were your thoughts on the movie?
